LANSING – State Representatives Deb Kennedy (D-Brownstown), Dian Slavens (D-Canton) and Doug Geiss (D-Taylor) today backed a plan that will create jobs for more than 23,800 Michigan workers, stimulate our economy and bring much-needed improvement to Michigan's ailing roads and bridges. The economic stimulus plan will pump more than $635 million into Michigan's economy
"In order to help get Michigan's economy back on track, it is imperative that we improve our state's road conditions," Kennedy said. "By investing in Michigan's infrastructure, we will help put thousands of our workers back on the job."
The $635 million federal stimulus package will create funding for more than 130 road and bridge improvement projects around the state, and create jobs for Michigan workers. Some of the projects in Wayne County include:
- $1.5 million to repair and reconstruct ramps on I-94 at Belleville and Haggerty;
- $2 million to repair and reconstruct of a portion of Telegraph Road extending south of Vreeland; and
- $3.225 million for a sound wall near the Telegraph and I-94 interchange in Taylor.
"These infrastructure projects will help facilitate economic growth and job creation in Wayne County, as well as the rest of the state," Slavens said. "With Michigan's economy in the shape that it's in, we must do everything we can to ensure that Michigan is an attractive destination for outside employers."
The federal stimulus package, which passed the House today, now heads to the Senate for approval.
"I urge my colleagues in the Senate to quickly pass this plan, which is critical to helping our economy," Geiss said. "The $635 million in federal funding will not only go toward much needed repairs and improvements to our bridges and roadways, it's just what we need to turn things around for Michigan's struggling residents who are in need of good-paying jobs."
