LANSING – State Representative Douglas Geiss (D-Taylor) today voted for a plan to invest $15 million in federal stimulus dollars in improvements at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which will help create jobs and boost economic development throughout the region.
"Detroit Metro brings countless visitors and goods into our state each day from all around the world, which is vital to supporting thousands of local jobs and businesses," said Geiss. "As the state's economic crisis continues, we must make sure that Detroit Metro – one of the country's busiest airports – remains in top-notch condition so we can help get Michigan's economy back on track."
Under the plan, which now heads to the Senate, $15 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds would go toward facility upgrades at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The improvements, which are part of a multi-year plan to reconstruct numerous runways and taxiways, include the reconstruction of portions of runway 9L/27R, the northernmost and oldest of Detroit Metropolitan Airport's two east-west runways.
"I will keep fighting to ensure that the 22nd District gets its fair share of federal stimulus dollars," Geiss said. "I urge my colleagues in the Senate to act quickly in passing this legislation and help make our state a great place to live, work, do business and raise a family."
